Biblical Moorings

Featured Study Of The Day

There are occasions in my daily dialogue with God that truths simply JUMP off the page and lodge themselves into my very soul. Today was one of those moments. This is from a wonderful compendium of the great man Spurgeon’s Godly invocations on Sermons of the Last Days titled Preparation for Heaven preached during the 1880s. Take note:

That a great change must be wrought in us, even ungodly men will confess, since the idea of the heaven of the Scriptures has always been repulsive, never agreeable, to unconverted men and women. When Muhammad would charm the world into the belief that he was the prophet of God, the heaven he pictured was not at all the heaven of holiness and spirituality. His was a heaven of unbridled sensualism, where all the passions were to be enjoyed without let or hindrance for endless years. Such the heaven that sinful men would like; therefore, such the heaven that Muhammad painted for them and promised to them. Such people cannot go to heaven, it is clear; they have not character or capacity to enter into its enjoyment. From sheer distaste for the society of heaven, they might fly to hell for shelter.

Charles Spurgeon quote ..

Featured Video Of The Day

I am thinking now of old Moses sitting on a mountain – sitting with God – looking across the Jordan into the Promised Land. I am thinking of the lump in his throat, that weary ache in his heart, that nearly bitter longing sweetened by the company of God … And then God – the great eternal God – takes Moses’ thin-worn, thread-bare little body into His hands – hands into whose hollows you could pour the oceans of the world, hands whose breadth marked off the heavens – and with these enormous and enormously gentle hands, God folds Moses’ pale lifeless arms across his chest for burial … I don’t know if God wept at Moses’ funeral. I don’t know if He cried when He killed the first of His creatures to take its skins to clothe this man’s earliest ancestors. I don’t know who will bury me – I think of God, on whose breast old Moses lays his head like John the Beloved would lay his on the Christ’s. And God sits there quietly with Moses – for Moses – and lets His little man cry out his last moments of life … But I look back over the events of my life and see the hands that carried Moses to his grave lifting me out of mine. In remembering I go back to these places where God met me and I meet Him again and I lay my head on His breast, and He shows me the land beyond the Jordan and I suck into my lungs the fragrance of His breath, the power of His presence  ~ Rich Mullins

Scott Hamilton Shares His Life Story For I Am Second

Scott Hamilton shares his life story in this 10-minute clip from the I Am Second series of uplifting testimonies from people of influence. Founded here in the Dallas, Texas area, I Am Second started as a conviction in the heart of Norm Miller, Chairman of Dallas-based Interstate Batteries. Directed by the Bible verse John 12:32, Norm was looking for ways in Dallas-Ft. Worth to “lift up Christ so that He might draw the people of his city to Jesus.“ A short time later he shared this conviction with e3 Partners, an organization he had partnered with for years. After a week-long collaboration with two of e3’s creative leaders, the idea become reality. For more info go here ..

The Crappy Christmas Song – Sally Munden with Jeremy Holtom

This delightful and charming production was posted onto my Facebook page by Jeremy Holtom. In his description he writes:
The video was created by animator Sally Munden in a week. Sally has worked with me as her mentor for eight years. It has been a hard journey from being stoned out of her brains to assembling circuit boards but this is her first full length video. What a fantastic transformation on the road to a dream. Have you got what it takes to dream or are you one of those who can’t be bothered and would rather stay a slave? If you have a dream and have the balls to crack your demons let us know.
Jeremy is so right on point with his sentiment. Many times we as believers go around “tut-tutting” too much, when in reality God expects us to be more like Christ – helping others to bring their dreams before him, and hence to fruition. Indeed a timely reminder right above from the great Spurgeon himself about the forgiving wonder of God’s grace. “But then, God” certainly moves in mysterious ways… Congrats Jeremy for living out the Gospel of Jesus Christ and helping Sally fulfill her God-given destiny.

The Moment Kirsten Powers “Outs” Herself As A Believer

Kirsten Powers

Luke 15:10 ~ Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.

“I grew up in the Episcopal Church in Alaska, but my belief was superficial and flimsy. It was borrowed from my archaeologist father, who was so brilliant he taught himself to speak and read Russian. Evangelical Christian wasn’t in my vocabulary. When I encountered doubt, I would fall back on the fact that he believed. Leaning on my father’s faith got me through high school. But by college it wasn’t enough, especially because as I grew older he began to confide in me his own doubts. What little faith I had couldn’t withstand this revelation. From my early 20s on, I would waver between atheism and agnosticism, never coming close to being an evangelical Christian; considering that God could be real.”

What happened to dear Kirsten from that moment on, is what we believers would term – “but then God ..”

Paul Harvey : If I Were The Devil ~ From 1965

Back in 1965 Paul Harvey was a well-known radio broadcaster with an audience that eventually reached 24 million listeners per day. His radio show Paul Harvey News and Comment was first broadcast nationally in 1951 and continued into the 21st century, making Paul Harvey one of the longest-lasting best-known voices on American radio. Harvey’s program, an ideosyncratic mix of headlines, comments, quips and advertisements – all voiced by Harvey – was syndicated at its peak to more than 1200 radio stations around the country each day. Famous for his work ethic, he wrote and recorded his shows six days a week from his Chicago studio. His brisk, quirky delivery and signature greeting Hello, Americans! were widely (and fondly) parodied. This piece turned out to be one of his more famous, if not the most prescient, of his oft-quoted prophetic news items. From the advantage of almost 50 years, it is obvious that this one was spot on!

HISTORICAL TRUTH OF THE DAY

If the Bible is the inerrant and infallible word of God, as it claims (II Timothy 3:16 and II Peter 1:2) we would expect there to be some evidence supporting these claims. After all, just because something claims to be the word of God does not make it true. We will examine the testimony of historical evidence to ask ~ Does the evidence support or deny the internal claims of the Bible? Three tests can be applied to the Bible to see if it exhibits characteristics of a divine book that is without error. First, external evidence should confirm the truthfulness of the Bible in areas we can investigate. Second, internal evidence should show that, in one way or another, the Bible is unique. While these tests can establish the reliability of the Bible and lend support to the Bible’s claims, they cannot prove its inspiration. However, the third test, a brief overview of Bible prophecy, will actually serve to verify the claim of divine inspiration.

Our Earthly Home Viewed From 4 Billion Miles Distant

Earth from 4 billion miles...

Then Job answered and said: I know it is so of a truth: but how should man be just with God? If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand .. Which commandeth the sun, and it riseth not; and sealeth up the stars. Which alone spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea. Which maketh Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades, and the chambers of the south .. He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing .. Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shown it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse .. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things .. And he is before all things, and by him all things consist..

  1. I just stumbled across your musings Gordon and how inspiring they are! Thank you for your comments on The Crappy Christmas Song much appreciated. You have grasped completely what the project is about. Its about losing black friday and all the ghastly commercialism of Christmas as it currently is and getting back to the real spirit of Christmas that I believe even the atheists are yearning for. I have actually released a very different track for this Christmas alongside The Crappy Christmas Song and I really believe that it will in time connect with everyone. It may even do it this Christmas. I believe the message of Christ is that it is more important what we do in our lives than how long we live and that we may even have to suffer and die to fulfil God’s purpose as Lincoln, Martin Luther King and Kennedy were required to do!. Thank you for beautiful, inspiring and deeply spiritual musings!

    • Thanks so much for your kind comments and interest in what I term my “Biblical Moorings” page, Jeremy .. I believe it was a couple of years or so ago that I included the vid into the mix … And I must say, that the “Black Friday” movement seems to have taken on a life all of its own in the interim, both in the USA and United Kingdom .. The “battle of the bulge” for gifts and entertainment, you might say! It really is a blot on society when we’ve allowed people the freedom to go camp out for a few nights in generally freezing temperatures for the privilege of leading the consumer army into storming the breaches of mega-stores to fight the enemy
(themselves!) on the battle-ground of “want!” (or should that be “greed?!”)

As the great Spurgeon put it, on the same page: “Such people cannot go to heaven, it is clear; they have not character or capacity to enter into its enjoyment. From sheer distaste for the society of heaven, they might fly to hell for shelter.”

Great stuff you’re doing, keep it up, and keep me apprised as you go forward.

      Cheers .. DG
